Wednesday, June 7th – NYC Loft Tenants held a press conference at the NY State Capital to demand legislators strike exclusionary language from the Loft Law that obstructs tenants from seeking safe live/work housing and rent protections.
We made a big impact on our legislators and asked for a 2017 Loft Law Clean Up Bill that addresses these issues:
- Strike Window & Basement Coverage Exclusion
- Strike Use Group Exclusions
- Strike the June 15 Application Deadline
- Make the 2015 Rent Milestones & Unit Size permanent
- Update the Coverage eligibility period to 2015-2017
Volunteers met with Senators and Assembly members to support an inclusive Loft Law: a 2017 Clean-Up Bill that will streamline the law, repeal the 2010 exclusions (windows, basements, use groups), remove the application deadline, and update the eligibility period. Without these changes tenants will lose much needed rent protection and housing rights.
Shout out to Eliza, Ximena and all the sign makers and window performers who created an amazing looking spectacle last week! Our legislators couldn’t believe their eyes. Several of our representatives (Senator Squadron, Assemblymembers Cymbrowitz, Lentol, Glick, Ortiz, Dilan and Carrol) showed up to express their support on the Million Dollar Staircase. (even old-timer Michael Mckee was impressed…)
Since then, we’ve achieved a massive amount with the first draft of our bill (8409) that addresses the window/basement issue, “incompatible use”, the application deadline and updates the eligibility dates to 2015 – 2017! That’s incredible – it means anyone who moved into a loft prior to June 2016 could potentially apply for loft law – if the bill passes.
“3-3-4%–4ever” has not been addressed. We need to make a lot of noise about that this week. Everyone should call their State legislators and say:
“I live in your district and I need you to support the 2017 Loft Law Clean Up bill and it must include 3-3-4% rent milestone increases being made permanent” (you could elaborate with your story about how rent stressed you are….)
If we don’t raise hell over this issue, the lower rent increases turn into pumpkins in June 2019 reverting back to 6-8-6%.
Now the real heavy lifting starts:
Our allies in the Assembly have led us to believe we’ll have the bill reported out of the Housing Committee this week. That will be the day to pack the committee room.
Anyone who can leave their dance card open for a possible last minute trip to Albany this week, please do!
Then the Loft Law Clean Up Bill is real!
And can be voted on in the Assembly.
The challenge is going to be convincing the republican controlled NYState Senate to support the bill.
Senator Marty Golden (R) has agreed to sponsor our bill in the Senate. This is great news but convincing a majority in the Senate is going to take more lobbying.
The masters of tenant advocacy (who have been fighting for tenants rights for 4 decades and spoke at our rally) have made it clear that if we don’t have NYCLT representatives in Albany every day bad things could happen to our bill.

Some of us are staying overnight; others are driving up and back to Albany twice a week. Support a better loft law for loft tenants who are covered now and loft tenants who still need coverage. Help make as many loft tenants as possible eligible for loft law protection.
